Mystical uses of Betel (Vetrilai)

Betel leaf is a heart-shaped leaf and is widely present in South Asia. It is widely seen in Indian homes and shops as they are mostly used during poojas. In medical terms, betel is used to obtain relief from fever, toxins, insect bites, wounds, boils, cold, heart pain, elephantiasis (Yannai Kaal), etc.

The following list provides the Medical uses of Betel when combined with other household edible substances:

1.Take 1 betel leaf and add 5 black pepper to it, roll it up. After which completely chew it. It provides relief from cold, fever, and toxin relief.

2.Extract juice from betel leaf. Take 2-3 spoons of betel juice, a quarter spoon of jeera powder. Mix the mixture and drink it. These are used for getting relief from toxins.

3.Apply the juices of betel leaf on the chest, to get relief from the cold present in the chest region.

4.To get relief from the cold take coconut oil, betel juice, and few pinches of camphor powder in a pan. Heat the mixture till the camphor gets dissolved and apply it to the chest.

5.The juice of betel leaf can be applied in the region of psoriasis or insect bit to get relief from it.

6.The juice of betel can be applied on the wounds or boils and make a wrap of betel bandage around the affected area.

7.In South India, there is a tradition of eating betel leaf after having a full meal. It is because it helps in the digestion of food and also helps in avoiding food poisoning. Betel leaf has to taken along with areca nut (betel nut or paaku), lime (sunnambu), and clove or fennel to get good taste and smell while chewing, and also it helps in the prevention of cramps during menstruation.

8.In a pan, add few tablespoons of gingelly oil and 2 leaves of betel. Set the flame to slow and switch it off after 2-3 minutes. Take the leaves and place them on the two-sided of your head to get relief from headache.

9.The betel leaf can be used for increasing breast milk for new mothers. Take a pan, add a few tablespoons of gingelly oil, and 2 leaves of betel. Set the flame to slow and switch it off after 2-3 minutes. Take the leaves and place them on the breast.

10.To a bowl add few cups of water, finely sliced betel leaves, 4 black pepper, 4 clove, and few leaves of tulsi. Heat the above bowl and filter it when the water has reduced to half its quantity. Drink the decoction in a warm stage to get relief from the cold. The obtained decoction can also be mixed with sugar or salt and pepper to obtain a great taste. This decoction acts as a great tonic for the heart and internal organs. Hence it can also be termed as a multipurpose tonic.

11.To obtain relief from the elephantiasis, extract the juice from a few (7-10) leaves of betel and drink it every day and also apply the juice to the affected area.
